B. Quin* ness, J.P., occupied the bench at theEesident Magistrate’s Court this morning. Four first offenders, charged with drunkenness, were fined 6s each. Andrew Moir, and B. Mao* kenzie, old offenders, were fined 10s each; in default 7 days imprisonment. John McLeod, a seaman on the Araby Maid, was charged with assaulting the master, Robert Stenhouse, the second mate, William Maokie, and the steward, James Ritchie. Mr White appeared for the captain and his officers. The charge had been partly beard on Monday. On Saturday night the captain was giving themrn 100 to go ashore with, but for certain reasons he refused to give prisoner money. After making a demand for it and being refused prisoner picked up a heavy inkstand containing three bottles, and was going to bring it down on the captain’s bead, when the steward caught his arm. Called in the second mate, and accused, the mate, and the steward had a rough and tumble in the cabin, accused striking and kicking them, and the captain had to call further assistance. Corroborative evidence was given by the mate and steward, and Constable Beddek proved the arrest. McLeod was very violent. The JJench sentenced him to three months’ imprisonmment on each charge, the sentences to be concurrent. Captain Stenhouse then charged McLeod with wilful neglect of duty on board ship, and ho was on this charge further sentenced to 12 weeks hard labour, to forfeit 30 days’ pay, to pay 42s costs of prosecution, witnesses 18s and court costs 7s. “ Where are you going my pretty maid ?” «• To the store for some Biscuits, Sir,” she said, “ Whose Biscuits my pretty maid ? ’ “ Why AriSEBEOOK’fI Oswegos, Sir,” she said,' —[Advt]
