According to the Boman correspondent of the London Tablet, Archbishop Logue, of Armagh, has received from the Vatican bighetto nominating, him a cardinal. This is, according to thtf Tablet, the first instance of a cardinalate being conferred on the occupant of the see of St. Patrick. Herr Habnicht, of Gotha, has satisfied himself that there is a distinct connection between the number of icebergs carried into the Gulf Stream and the character of the subsequent weather experienced in Europe. Thus, 1878 was a year in which very few were reported, and was followed by a year of great warmth. On the other band, he connects the abnormallly cold spring and summer of 1891 following a very cold winter with the great number of ice mountains in the Atlantic during the year 18 90. This may bo mere coincidence, unless, indeed, it is to be accounted for by the cooling of the Gulf Stream—the influence of which on the climate of Europe is not now considered so paramount as was at ©ne time believed— or to the prevalence of the cold north-easterly winds to which the presence of the icebergs generated on the shores of Davis Strait and Baffin’s Bay is duo.—This discussion has a bearing upon the phenomena of New Zealand weather, as affected or nou by the presence of icebergs in the Ticimty of the islands, * ¥
