[By Telegraph.) MASTjERTON, Fra. 23. The first annual sports of the Wairarsp* Athletic Club were hold to-day. A slight rain fell all the time. The sports passed off very successfolly. The 250 yards championship was won by Archie D’Arcy, after a magnificent race with Roman Gnrr, the only other starter. Time—27sec. D’Arcy also won the 100 yards and 200 yards. WELLINGTON, Fra 28. A large number of sheep have lately been purchased in Wellington for southern districts. The steamtr Rotorua, which sailed this afternoon, took about 300 bought in the Wainsrapa district by Mr Hulcook, to be forwarded to Christchurch. The Penguin, leaving for Lyttelton to-morrow, takes another consignment of 400, and the Oban, which leaves tomorrow or on Saturday, will carry another instalment of 2000. The two last named docks arc understood to have been purchased also in the Wairarapa district by Mr Mowatt. Another 1000, now in the Hutt district, will be ready for shipment to Lyttelton next week, probably by the Ohau, also consigned to Mr Mowatt. A woman named Elizabeth Downey, aged 70, was charged with drunkenness to-day. The evidence went to show that she was the support of her father and mother, aged 9S and 96, respectively. Defendant had lately given way to intemperate habits. She was remanded for medical treatment. The bot fly is making its appearance in Wellington. A meeting of the Christchurch regatta committee to night decided, before paying over the prizes won at the late regatta, to inspect the Kaiapoi course, with the officials who laid it off, to ascertain if any alteration bad bees made in the angle of the start for the champion fours. The Canterbury Acclimatisation Society to day decided to recommend the Government to forward all salmon ova expected to arrive in the colony shortly, to Otago and Southland, for distribution. The Lake Forsyth Regatta produced a less of £57. DUNEDIN, Fra. 23. The Harbour Board have agreed to lease the bid dredge to the Wellington Harbour Board for six months, and it was decided to intimate this to the Bluff Harbour Board, which also desired to charter the dredge. It appears that in the Domain Handicap there was another mishap, which no one on the press stand observed, nor did anyone else notice it. When Reflection came down she brought down Golden Pippin. Sydney Palmer Batcher, a meeting of whose creditors was held to day, has filed with liabilities of £4576, of about equal amounts secured and unsecured. His statement showed a deficiency of £IOOO odd. He attributed his position to Ibe purchase of a beast which proved cancerous. There was a great deal of comment on this, and bis business fell off. He lost £IOOO by that, although the business recovered, and another £IOOO by an exodus of customers to Australia without paying their debts. An offer of £4OO for the assets was refused, and the meeting adjourned for further investigation.
