[By Telegraph.) /I Mining Expert. WELLINGTON, Feb. 23. Mr Leon Perrett, who was arrested by mistake in Queensland as a Russian spy, has been visiting the mines in the south, accompanied by the Inspector He comes accredited from the Russian Government os a mining expert. He was much struck with the river dredging in Otago, which he considers could be profitably applied to rivers in Butsia. Mr Perrett is now on bis way to Rotorua and Te Aroha. where§ the local inspector will show him round the mines. The Defences. Colonel Fox's report on the defences, etc., will not bo published in full, it being partly confidential. The Government will probably allow a precis only to be circulated, containing (hose portions to winch tho Commandant considers there is no objection to make public. Gate Money. The Champion Alhlcfcie Meeting shows a profit of £97. Crown Lands. The Minister of. Lands is engaged upon a scheme *or the disposal of unoccupied Crown lands in tho Clarence district. Vice-Resral The Governor was greatly pleased with the scenery and with the warm reception ho was given on the West Coast. Lord Hopetoun arrives oa Saturday, and probably some sort of official reception will be given him. Typhoid In LytteltonThe Colonial Secretary has received no communication from Lyttelton re tho Hinemoa. He considers he has no power to interfere with the ship.
