The return match between the Geraldine and Colonial Cricket Clubs’ second elevens will be played on the Caledonian ground on Thursday afternoon next. Play will com. menee about 3 o’clock. Mr Graham remarked at the Charitable Aid Board to-day that a good novelist would find material for many a good yarn in the stories told by some of the board’s proteges. The stories ho referred to would nob make “ good ” yarns. A fresh sample of weather was submitted for general approved to-day, and it failed to please. The wet blanket of cloud sprod over South Canterbury yesterday began to drip during the small hours this morning, and a few “points ”of rain were measured. There is at the time of writing no sign of it dearieg up. The Itangitihei Advocate reports that a discovery was recently made in the Ponkiore bush, which offers scope for any amount of romantic conjecture. Someone was underscrubbing in the heart of the bush there, when the splasher struck a metallic substance hidden by the leaves and soil, which, on being i turned up, proved to be a part of the copper sheathing of a ship’s bottom. The point at which it was found is estimated at about 50 miles from the coast, and is in the heart of a large area of dense bush, and the problem is how it came there. ■»
