Sir George Grey and the Next Election.
Amongst the select circle in Auckland who interest themselves in politics, there is a good deal of talk about the nest general election. That will not take place till well on in the spring, but even yet it is an interesting topic for some folk. The knotty problem just now is the position of Sir George Grey. Newton, as a constituency, is wiped out, and, as we cannot do without Sir George, he must make his appearance in a quarter where, perhaps, his presence is unwelcome to some people. It is believed that his owa idea is to come out for thq city. That would be very embarrassing for several politicians, but that is just where the fun would come in, for others, and perhaps for the Grand Old Man himsulf. As for prospective candidates for the city, their name is legion. The three sitting members want to continue sitting, on the off chance of hatching something next session. The Liberal Association will bo somewhat puzzled. The present members arc all Government supporters, and naturally and properly' the Liberal Association want to send three men who will be agreeable to Mr Ballance. Yet they are pressed by good Liberals to take them up, which would mean that the present men, or some of them, would have to be dropped. They can hardly take up Sir George Grey, because he must be reckoned amongst those mho would not object to have an opportunity of throwing out the present Ministry, and yet they could not fight against him. Because, to begin with, he was a Liberal when the present Ministers, or some of them, could not be reckoned in that camp ; and because, even if they went against him, he would get in in spite of them.
