NEWS OF THE DAY.
The four roomed wooden house of a settler named Cochrane, situate between Bu‘herlands and the Cave, was, we lesrn, burnt to the ground on Monday afternoon. The fire destroyed everything, not even an article of furniture being saved. It is said that several of Mr Cochrane's neighbours are assisting him in the serious trouble which has come upon him. The usual weekly meeting of the Crystal Spring Lodge; No. 54, 1.0.G.T., was held in the Foresters' Hall, George street, last evening. Bro, G. W. Ellis, 0.T., was in the ohair. After the usual business was over the programme for the evening, which took tbs form of question box, was gone through, and created great amusement. After a pleasant hour had been spent the lodge was closed by the O.T. at 9.30 p.m.
A special muster parade of the C Battery N.Z.A. was held on Tuesday evening. There was a good attendance. The battery was paraded in marching order and inspected by Lieutenant Oolonel Bailey, who also inspected the spare arms. The annual reissue of equipment to members was made during the evening. Corporal Green has been appointed to command the No. 3 sub division, vice Sergeant Turnbull, who has left the district. The period of enrollment having been extended recruits can join up to the end of April.
At a meeting of the Ashburton County Council on Monday, a letter was read from the Railway Commissioners slating that the cost of a sheep bridge over the Kangitata would be £586, and the annual cost of maintenance £2O. This, however, would not include a bridge over tbo small channel at the extreme north end of the existing bridge. The cost of a continuum bridge from end t ’ and would be £Bll, and the annual cost £25. The Ashburton Council decided to ask the Geraldine County Council if they would be willing to pay half cost of the bridge.
The following curious communication re lates to a matter which the Borough Ooun oil ought to take into immediate consideration, with a view of providing an effectual remedy : —.*• Titnaru Feby 16th /93.
