Yesterday’s Gale.
|Hf:t violent south-west gale, accomheavy rain, broke over Waimate at p.m. yesterday, and continued fury for more than an hour. then ceased, but the wind kept up the rest of the afternoon. Few can possibly remain standing after such and as there is still a large area of HGain out in the fields, a considerable amount w oi damage must have been done. A terrific south-east storm broke over the Point yesterday afternoon at 2.30 p.m. without a moment’s warning. It must have been travelling at the rate of 50 miles per hour. Large trees were snapped, others wore com pletely uprooted. The school was in some danger from falling trees, and the pupils were removed from the infant department. The barometer fell nine points and read 28’8 Several stacks were blown down, and the orchards have foffered lo on alarming extent The gelee was severely felt at Temuka. The drill shed was shifted three inches on its foundations, tho Eoyal hot.?! bad part of tho roof stripped, some large windows were blown in, the rope walk at the fliximll was blown down, and rcores of trees broken and uprooted in the Park aud elsewhere. And all over the district the stocks were scattered, and stacks lorn open. (Br Telegkapw.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 14. Yesterday’s gale has blown itself out and the weather to-day is fine and calm. Captain Edwin reports that there are now evidences of heavy gales from the northward with rain, between midnight on Wednesday and noon on Saturday next, the wind changing by west to south-west. OAM ABU, Feb. 14. A heavy gale yesterday did some small damage. Stocks wore flattened, a few windows blown in, and orchards and gardens damaged.
