Hew Zealand Wheat in Glasgow.
Mr Thomas Mac’ean, of the firm of Urs and Sens, millers, of Glasgow, is at present in the North Otago district, and the other evening ho was interviewed by a representalive of the Oamara Mail, to whom he spoke as follows concerning matters appertaining to the milling business : '• There is practically very little New Zealand wheat used in Glasgow. Most of the Australasian wheat is absorbed before reaching Glasgow. You see it is not shipped direct to the Clyde, and if we do get a cargo it has to be transhipped first, which, of course, adds to the cost. We use mostly American, which is shipped d reot to us. The New Zealand is undoubtedly preferable if in good condition. Provided the trice were kept low enough, a direct market might bo opened at Glasgow on a largo scale, for a great deal of wheat is used there. About 28s to 32s a quarter would be a fdr average price, but of course this would be governed entirely by circumstances and the condition of the American market I have seen flour as high as 75a per 2801 b during my experience and as low as 28s, which is about the price now for ‘patents,’ ‘straights’ being worth £l. When New Zsaland wheat can be got wo prefer it. It is a good wheat, and gene rally hard and dry, which suite our roller milling. Scotch wheat we o mnot use. It is too damp, and, as a matter of fact, since the introduction of roller milling revolutionised the trade, very little wheat has been grown in Scotland. Farmers are turning their attention to something else. Of course, it would be of no use to ship inferior or damaged wheat, and any dampness would bo fatal. 'The wheat must be dry, and if you can give us a good dry sample of fair quality and at a reasonable price there is a large market waiting at Glasgow for direct shipments. All things being equal, our own colonies would readily have the preference over America and other countries.”
