She comes in ballast - from Adelaide to load grain and wool for the ... C.F. - ssociation. The barque Peri, ordered on from Port Chalmers to Timarn, also hove in sight - yesterday afternoon, and sailed close in while the Mana was busy with the Araby Maid. ' After the latter vessel was safety moored, the Maoa went out, picked up the Peri and towed 7 her to moorings at the outer buoys. ’ The Pori loads wool and grain here for the New Zealand Shipping Company. .Although the loss of the whaleback Chas. , W., Wentmore on the Pacific Coast must be considered a set back to this type of vessel . for ocean service, the accident is not of a kind that will greatly hinder the work , of the American Steel Barge Company in building tbesd vessels for coast service. In all her - career of mishaps the only trouble that can . - be said to have been due to construction was the leakage in the bow plates, caused by the heavy pounding of the seas on the blunt, spoon-shaped bow. .This was partly remedied ; by placing water ballast tanks forward, causing the ship to sink deeper, especially when running light. With more substantial construction, it may be expected that the Barge Company will go ahead building whalebacks for deep water trade just as though this ■ accident had never happened.
