VOTING EARLY AND OFTEN.

Soma extraordinary results were obtained during the recent general election in Queensland. The “ Brisbane Observer” says : “At Thomson’s Creek, where the Opposition got a majority of twenty, only one man lives ; at Watsonville more votes were polled for the Opposition than there are voters in that district; at Lower Tait and California Creek, the Opposition state that there was more polling for the Government than there are voters. Great excitement occurred at Herberton owing to the fifty votes polled at Halpin’s and 180 at California Gully. It is stated there are not fifty voters in both places together.” On the same subject the Brisbane correspondent of the “ Sydney Morning Herald” writes: returns from outside places filled nearly everybody with amazement. From being in a minority the two Government candidates vaulted over the heads of their opponents, At California Gully and Halpin’s, Mr Hamilton polled 230 votes and Mr Cooper 223, while Mr Hill polled only 31 and Mr Campbell 16. It is said by telegraphists in the electorate that there are not 100 voters anywhere near the two polling places ; so how the large number of ballot papers found their way there is a profound mystery. It is a mystery about which more will be heard. It is said that both sides have pursued resurrection and personation tactics ; but it is simple truth to say that both parties in Brisbane are staggered by the turn things took when California Gully and Hatpin's reported results.”
