Welcome BainWellington, Dec, 27. Much needed rain is tailing. Eeception of Sir J. Vogel Sir Julius Vogel arrived at one o'clock and was met by the Hon. Major Atkinson and several leading citizens. There was no ceremony. He will bo entertained at a luncheon to-morrow. Died In His Cell. Christchurch, Dec, 2?. A stout, middle aged man, who arrived by the south train last night in a state of intoxication, and was taken to the police depot, was found dead in the cell this morning. When taken to the depot he gave his name ns Samuel Marshall, but it is doubtful whether this is his proper name. When vj-ited in the cell at 3 n.m., he appeared all right, but when the constable next went in at 6 o’clock, he was dead. Gold Mining. Dunedin, Dec. 27. The Cromwell Company have just crushed 3G3 oz. from 400 tons of quartz.
