CLEVER OPERATION.
The following telegram, dated Paris, September 12, appeared in the “ London Standard”;—A remarkable surgical operation was performed yesterday at the Lariboisiere Hospital, in this city. Some days since, a waiter employed at a cafe on the Boulevard Kochechonart undertook, for the amusement of some customers, to swallow a spoon. His idea was merely to pretend to swallow it, but to his surprise, he did swallow it in reality. He was conveyed, in the greatest agony, to the hospital, where he has since remained, awaiting the construction of special instruments for the performance of an operation. This was performed by M. Felizet. - He first made an incision in the epigastric region. After a complete cleansing of the stomach by the Fauchor tube, the special apparatus contrived for the occasion enabled the operator to dilate the cavity so as to bring it to the opening of the wound, thus facilitating (he search for and the the extraction of the foreign substance. The operation, including the time occupied by the administration of chloreform, lasted 45 minutes. The spoon extracted measures no less than nine and a-holf inches. No doubt is entertained as to the recovery of the patient.
