S. C. Times Office, Monday Evening. Messrs Maclean and Stewart report for the past week, as follows : Pf orseß _An average entry of 53 head can'; iO 'Wi')d to their yanfs for sale on Sain.'day. A Lie proportion of these were goo't draughts, I"r which there was a slightly improved demand, resulting in a gojJ number changing hands at better prices than last week. They sold privately during the week, ,to a Southern buyer, 8 first-rdass draughts, and at auction ou Saturday, they disposed of 26 head at, for medium to good draughts, £27 to £36 ; ordinaiy, £lB to £25 ; hacks, medium to good, £l2 to A’ lß ; inferior to ordinary, £6 to £lO Buggies spring carts and harness also sold at sa.islactory paces. Cattle—They have enquiries for 2 and 3-year-old steers and heifers, and as feed is now abundant all over South Canterbury and only a comparatively limited number of this class of stock in the district, buyers may for some time to come expect, to pay consider *bly higher for all classes of stores than they have done lately. They have no transactions to report either in fat or st"re.
Sheep—They sold privately during the week 400 cross-bred hoggets at a satissactory price, and at Arowhenua on Friday 200 merino ewes and lambs at 10-* Id.
Country Sales—At Arowhenua on Friday they sold, on account of the ex- outers of the late Mr John Orammond, ?0 bead of horses at above qu tations. Cows in milk and; calving, £5 to £7 10s. Implements and harness at fair values.
Properties— hey offered and sold on Saturday, in the estate of Win Halstead, a life interest in 50 acres of land situated at Pleasant Point, the sum realised being £230. They also offered a property in Wai-iti township, but the reserve not being obtained, it was pas-ed in.
Messrs William Collins and Co. reporta good demand for all classes of produce and general sundries at their sale on Saturday. The attendance of buyers was above the average, consequently all entries brought good figures. Potatoes, 10s to 12b per sack ; fowl wheat, 9s to 10s per sack ; oa's, 2s 6d per bushel; new cheese, 7sd per lb ; butter, 7 to 8d per lb ; eggs, Is 3d to Is 4d per dozen; honev, per lb ; hams, fid per lb ; bacon. 8d to 51 per lb ; farmers’ flour, 15s per sack ; fowls, 2s fid per pair ; geese, 9s per pair; turkeys, an inferior lot, 3s fid to 4s each; box teas, 11s to 13s; kerosene, 15s per case ; Tennant’s beer, 6s fid per dozen ; porter, 4s fid per dozen.
Messrs Southern and Stubbs report for their weekly market and auction on Saturday a fair attendance but scarcely an average briskness of bidding. Potatoes are but little enquired for end but few sales to record, good sound Derwents fetching from 7s to 9s per bag ; fowls wheat, a small line was quitted at 10s to 12s per sack ; bacon, slightly inferior, 4d per lb ; better quality, fid ; but not much demand and few sales ; fresh butter, fid to 7d per lb ; fowls, 2s fid to 3s per pair; geese, 6s fid to 7s per pair; ducks and turkeys, none; eggs, lOd to Is per dozen ; corned . beef, prime quality, 2d to 2Jd per lb ; tea in boxes, 14s to 15s per box ; farmers’ flour, no sales ; farmers’ pork, none tt) hand ; a few lines of plated jewellery brought above wholesale prices, also other furnishing sundries ; the market generally is depressed.
