There was a clean sheet at the B.M. Court this morning. A leak has been discovered in the stop valve at the head of North street, and in order to effect necessary repairs the water will be cat off from the reservoir at 6 o’clock to-night. It will not be on again format least 24 hours, but the water remaining in the pipes will probably last till 10 o’clock at night. Those who have no tanks to fall back on, would do well ,to immediately secure their to-morrow’s supply of water. We have received a copy of the Canterbury and Otago Book Almanac for 1883. It is printed at the “ Timara Herald ” office and is a very creditable production. It will be sufficient for us to say that so far as almanacs are concerned it is the best shilling’s worth offered in New Zealand.
The match Auckland v. Ashburton ended in a wretched defeat for the local players. The latter played with fifteen men and only scored 124 in their innings. The Aucklanders then went in and for the loss of one wicket ran the score up to 154. “ Well,” says I, “ Jack your foot is a whopper. I never seed the beat of that in all my born days. It beats Gasper Zwicher’s all holler, and his is so big folk says he has to haul on his trousers over his head.”—“ Sam Slick.”
