CRICKET.

TIMABU F. AUCKLAND. FIRST DAY. The day so anxiously looked forward to by Timaru cricketers has proved delightfully fine. The Aucklanders arrived hereby the morning train from Oamaru, and were warmly received by the members of the local club, and their play is excellent in every department of the game. The ground was in capital order, and the wickets were ; pitched at 12.30. The attendance of the public was most meagre. The Aucklanders won the toss and sent the Timaru men to the wickets, Shepherd and Smith going in first to encounter the bowling of Buckland and Arneil. The first over was a maiden, Shepherd scored a bye in the second, but was afterwards caught by Buckland. His place was immediately filled by Eaymond, who scored one off the first ball. The next over Eaymoud contributed another single to the score. After some rather languid play, Smith scored 1 from Arneil’s bowling, Smith maintaining a good defence. At the next over Raymond scored another single. Several maiden overs followed, when Raymond made 4 by a brilliant hit, from the bowling of Arneil. The : last ball of the next over was fatal to Smith, who, on retiring, was applauded for his steady defence. King took his place, and Raymond immediately scored another single. At the next over King was run out, and Hughes went to the wickets, when Eaymoud made 2, fob, lowed by 4 off Arm-il., Hughes scored a ' single, and Eaymond another two in quick succession. The game now begun to get somewhat livelier, Barton took charge of the ball at

Arneil’s end, and at his second ball Hughes was caught out by Gardiner. Lough then went in and began by scoring . one and shortly after two, closely followed by a wel'-p'antcd four. Lankham now relieved Dockland at the bowling, and a good deal of .anticipation was indulged in by the knowing, ones, as Lankham is the bowler of the team. Lough was caught by Gardiner, and Scott went in in his place. Raymond now scored one, but was shortly after bowled by Lankham, having put together the respectable score of 18. He was much applauded for his care and skill. The telegraph now, showed 6—18—33. Eichbaumfilled the vacancy and Scott then skied a ball from Lankham, which was surprisingly missed by Buckland, and thus contributed 1 to the score. At the next ball Eichbaum scored 4 from Barton. Nothing worthy of notice occurred until McKenzie who succeeded Eichbaum, scored 4 by a well-directed, hit. The next ball of

Lankham’s neatly bowled Scott. 8 2—45. Jones, who followed Scott, „ was bowled by Lankham, and Ness, who came after him, had a similar fate. This closed the innings. After the luncheon adjournment the Aucklanders went in, Lankham and Barton going first to the wickets, Lough and Hughes bowling. In the seCond over Barton scored 4 off Hughes bowling. In the next over Lankham was bowled by Lough. Arneil followed, and made several singles, and then a. 2, bringing his score up to 7, after which Barton was clean bowled by Lough. Yates then filled the vacancy, and after a series of singles had been added to the score. Arneil was splendidly bowled by Lough. Testro, who followed Arneil, began to score with a single at the 3rd ball. The scores stood as follows when our reporter left the ground:—
