The Austral inquest was closed without anything satisfactory being elicited as to the cause of the disaster. The captain, chief officer, and chief engineer failed to account for the accident, but the jury in their verdict found that they had been guilty of negligence in omitting to lake proper precautions, as the whole operation of coaling was left to a lamp trimmer, who was on duty as watchman from 6 p.tn. to (5 a.m. Previous warnings had been given of the ship being tender and of her listing, but they were unheeded. During a terriffic thunderstorm a house at Woolloomoolloo was struck by lightning. Melbouene, The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly has received a letter from General Hutchinson submitting prol pusals for the improvement of the Victorian submarine defences. Ogle, the solicitor’s clerk who was
brought from England, lias been committed for trial.
At the Presbyterian General As.SiMiibly, the Ilev. Mr Murdoch McDonald’s resolution approving of the proposed declaratory act on confession of faith was carried after a protracted discussion, but its formal adoption has been deferred pending the anticipated union of the Presbyterian Churches of Australia.
The Pilot Board found the pilot in charge of the ship George Thompson guilty of an error of judgment re the stranding of the ship at the Heads.
