THE HOME HARVEST.

That the harvest outlook for 1882 at Hoag (wijs tha “ Swfl ISfflwa)

fairly satisfactory, compared with late years, may be accepted as good news. Of all crops oats and barley promise host, so that the yield of straw will be abundant Last week was a capital harvesting one, and its genial sunshine will go far to repair the evil influence om cereals especially—that previous weeks had exercised. Scotland reports that her wheat crops will more than answer Expectation ; while Irelands staple, her potato crop, if it falls short of last harvest’s yield—one of the best ever known—is yet likely to_ leave nothing tb complain of. Oats in the latter country, too, are promising ; but inasmuch as over thirty thousand additional acres have been given up to potato cultivation within the last year, the actual amount of grain will fall appreciably short of previous growths. In point of what may be called minor and particular crops, the nows is both good and bad, according to locality. The good folk of Kent and Sussex are in despair over their hop season, while Wiltshire suffered in respect of wheat. Hanfpshirb has had a long delayed but excellent harvest, and it may be said generally that a longer interval than usual has noted between earing and reaping in all parts of the country. Taking the year round, we have had no doubt more than a fair share of rain ; so much so, indeed, that attention is again called to the necessity for some better means of protection for the standing crops. But we are making up by a goodly spell of early autumnal’ sunny days.
