Ryan, ! a horsedealer, who was arrested on September 30 last, on a . warrant, charging him with horsestealing in New Zealand, was brought up on habeas on four charges—firstly, with being an absconder from the New Zealand Court of Bankruptcy ; secondly, with fraudulently removing £444 10s belonging to his creditors ; thirdly, with concealing £444 10s ; and, finally, with conspiring to remove £204 10s the money of his creditors. The prisoner’s wife, Bridget Leonora Ryan, was also charged on warrant, in. company ; with a young girl named Mary Ryan, with conspiring to remove £204 10s for the purpose of defrauding his creditors. The latter prisoners were arrested on Thursday by Detective Eirby of the New Zealand police, and ’Detectives Brown and Potter, and on their place of abode being searched savings bank deposit receipts and other valuable securities, to the amount of £9OO, were found sewn up between the lining of a vest belonging to a boy who had been' living with the Ryans since their arrival in the colony. Oh the application of Inspector Drought the prisoners were formally remanded until Tuesday next, when the original warrant and depositions will be produced, and an application made for their committal to gaol pending the issue of the Governor’s warrant of extradition. It is alleged that Ryan went to New Zealand from Victoria in February , last, and took up land at Timafu under the purchasing clauses of the Land Act of that colony. He dealt largely in stock of every description, which. he ; purchased chiefly from the Dunedin and Christchurch auctioneers on easy terms, and drove them to other markets and disposed of them. Ho failed to meet any of the heavy, responsibilities which he had incurred, and absconded under the assumed name of Tellgood in the Hingarooma from Dunedin on the 24th of August last, leaving debts to the extent of over £1,400. He was arrested in Melbourne on an allegation of horse-stealing, but was subsequently made bankrupt, when the above charges were preferred.
