THE EAST AND WEST COAST RAILWAY.

Dunedin, Nov. 1. The Reefton Bailway League having requested the co-operation of the Dunedin Chamber qf Commerce in their efforts to induce the Government to construct a .railway between the West and East Coasts via < Canterbury, the Secretary, by direction of the Committee, has forwarded the following reply
“ November 1,1882. “ Sir, — 1 have the honor, by direction 'of the Committee of this Chamber, to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 30th September, and in answer I am instructed to state that, in the _ face of Mr Blair’s report (see Parliamentary Papers, 1879) and the report of the Commissioners appointed to the Christchurch Chamber of Commerce, published in January o£ this year, the Committees of the Dunedin Chamber do not see that they can with propriety give their assistance to the League, until information of a more detailed character is furnished than is the case at present. At the same time the Committee fully admits the necessity of railway communication between the East and West Coasts of this Island, and will moat gladly co-operate with
the Reef ton Railway League in any scheme they may be able to suggest, by which a practicable route for the proposed line of could bo obtained. I am, ,&c.,
