REVIEW.

, PIOUJRB: QUB NEW ZEALAND. No portion of the British' dominions affords more material for the artist, and the descriptive author than New Zealand. The appetjte of the British public has been whetted, not satisfied, by a fewvigorous descriptions that have been published,.and Mr Gully’s magic pencil has shown the world the true physical grandeur of our colony. Any effort to popularize the knowledge of the various features of the country, and to inspire thestay-aUhome masses, who see nothing but their own locality, from year to year, with admiration for the beautiful in nature is a good work ; and this Mr 0, 0. Montrose has undertaken in an illustrated work, of which a copy of Part 1 has just reached us,entitled ‘‘Picturesque New Zealand ’’ published by Mr H. K. Gilmour, Auckland. Its external get. up resembles that of an "Art Journal," the typography is excellent and the general appearance pleasing. I t con* tains several well-chosen illustrations lithographed by Schmidt and Co., Auckland. The number before us is an introductory one, in which the objects and scope of the work are set forth, and a quantity of general information relative to the climate, products and special features of the colony, is pleasingly put together. The illustrations are accurate, and their somewhat sombre tint refreshes the eye. They are creditable specimens of the lithographer’s art. Tlio work is fitly dedicated to Sir George Grey who, we believe, has taken an active interest in its production, and will contribute to its columns. We commend the new work to every family, and Wish it success.
