Judge Richmond said the case »as an extraordinary one, and he intended not to make any comments upondt, at present. There were certain points requiring 1 further consideration, and he would postpone his judgment.; The prisoner, would be admitted to bail on finding sureties for £2OO. i Whales in Sight- ; Geeymouth, October 9. ; Arrived, yesterday evening— Barque Examiner, from Wellington, in ballast. Captain Clarkson reports that during his 25 years experience He never saw so many whales as ho encountered between Cape Farewell and Greymoutb, twelve being in sight on one occasion, besides seeing them all the way. :

imprisonment, for illegally catching trout.
A Fast Living Civil Servant.
At a meeting of the creditors of "Richard Dodds Thomson, a Customs officer, it appeared that the debtor was in receipt of £l5O per year, and was living at the rate of £6OO a year. He had incurred a number of debts without making any attempt to settle them. Mr James Duncan was appointed trustee, and he was instructed to represent these facts to the Government, Rifle Association. A most successful meeting of the New Zealand Rifle Association is promised. Every district in Otago will be represented. The Totalisator in Court. In the totalisator case the Magistrate gave judgment for the amount paid.into Court, holding that Goodison and the other five investors only were entitled to one sixth each of the amount registered. ?
