The reduction of 25 per cent from the present insurance rates has been settled upon by all the Insurance offices, and will take effect as from October 1. The Timarn Intellectual Improvement Elociety held its last meeting for the session of 1882, last evening, in the Forester's Hall. There was a good attendance. The Balanoe Sheet was adopted and a vote of thanks accorded to the past and present officers, and Mr Dimant (the late secretary) was elected an honorary member. ,The discussion on "Woman's Suffrage" <hen followed, and was freely entered into by those present, after which the meeting terminated. Regarding a recent case of assault in Wellington the " N.Z. Times " says :—Mrs Lucia Pierleoni had abused one Dante Gamonozoi in very choice Italian, threatened to break his head with a rolling-pin, and expressed a desire to make a. meal of certain of his internal organs. For these offences she was fined 6s and costs. One of the witnesses was a very little, but preternaturally sharp girl of 12, who proved to be able to swear proficiently in both English and Italian, though she professed, a , preference for the last . named language. It may be interesting to those who make a study of comparative philology, to know that the insinuation that a man is the son of a female canine quadruped, is a common form of abuse in Italy, though it has generally been regarded as an expression of endearment, used generally and almost exclusively ,by the British sailor. The result of the Jolimont railway accident is thus summed, up by the " Argus":— *' A loss in killed and wounded, equivalent to that of the British fleet at the bombardment of Alexandria ; the payment of £50 ; 000in damages; the expenditure of twice that amonnt indirectly ; the sacrifice of the profits of the line for the' year—all. brought about, as the report says, by the; breaking of a wheel-fire, ' such' tire being both unsound and dangerous.'" A Polish journalist. M. Eryze, publishes in the " Kuryer Poranny," > of Warsaw, an account of an interview which he-had with General Skobeloff shortly before his death. Mr Fryze' began the conversation by remarking that General 'Skobeloff bad been so' much troubled by interviewers that the very-sight of a journalist must be ob-, noxious to ,him. "On the contrary," was the reply, '• I o*'e my present position to »he Press, and especially to ithe English Press. If it were not for the special correspondents-of whom there were, always some with me during tho Turkish war—l should bare remained a major-general and no one would have heard of me."
