THE MILE CHAMPIONSHIP OF NEW ZEALAND.
Dunedin, Sept, 2.
A mile foot-race batwoen Burk and O’Connor, for £IOO and the championship of Now Zealand, was run on the Caledonian Society’s ground to-day.
and between four and five thousand persons .were present. O’Connor had been a slight favorite until within the past few days, the betting changing from six to four on him to even money at the start. The day was fine, bnt there was a strong wind, which, in addition to so Iheavy a track, rendered the time poor. O’Connor went off at a great pace, and quickly showed that his tactics were to obtain so commanding a lead that Burk, whose finishing powers are remarkable, would not be able to catch him. Entering the fourth lap he had a lead of about forty yards, which Burk had reduced at the end of the lap to ‘ between twentyfive and thirty. O’Connor was still running strong, and few thought Burk could catch him ; but, putting on speed by a wonderful effort, Burk in toe fifth and last lap gradually wore him down, and over a hundred yards from home passed him, winning by fifteen yards, amidst uproarious cheers from his local admirers. O’Connor stuck gamely to it till the finish. The time was 4min. 38secs.
