SOUTH CANTERBURY TEACHERS’ ASSOCIATION.
ENTERTAINMENT IN THE THEATRE.
HAccording to announcement, the Association last night gave an entertainment in the Theatre Royal, consisting of instrumental and vocal music, readings, and recitations, 1 Mr E, Wakefield presided* and there was a good attendance in the circle, and a fair muster in the stalls, the pit being empty. The Chairman opened the proceedings with a few appropriate remarks. and the various items of the programme were then gone through most successfully. It had been arranged that, encores would not be to, and this proved a very judicious measure, as the rendering of some of the items would have undoubtedly entailed an undue prolongation of the business of the evening. It would be invidious to particularise, when all acquitted themselves so well, and gave .evidence of careful preparation ; and we shall therefore not single out any for special commendation, save the School Drum and Fife Band, This little musical corps has become quite a feature of Timaru entertainments and their appearance, in very pretty nautical costume, called forth as much eulogy as did their excellent time and tune. 1 * Altogether the teachers are to be congratulated on their success, for they certainly provided the public with a most enjoy, able evening’s entertainment. RE-UNION IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOL. After the concert, a large number of ladies and gentlemen, invited by the Association, met in one of the schoolrooms, and spent some hours in dancing. About 75 couples were present, and an excellent orchestra was provided. Every provision had been thoughtfully made for the comiort of the guests, and the utmost enjoyment prevailed. It is most gratifying to record this first social gathering of the teaching profession in Timaru, and we hope there will he many similar ones. MEETING IN THE SCHOOL-ROOM, f The Association held a meeting in the school-room this morning, Mr J. Scott in the chair. About a dozen teachers attended. It was decided to change the name of the Association to Educational Institute of South Canterbury. The delegates who had attended the Dunedin Conference reported that a " very cordial reception had been accorded
in Dunedin, and detailed the business that had been done by the Conference. Mr. Stewart, of Pareora, then read his promised paper on “ The Standards." The paper dealt exhauetively with this interesting subject, and was commented upon and discussed by those present. This was all the business. ■
