ATTEMPTED ASSASSINATION IN MELBOURNE

O’PABBBLL FIRES AT THE ROMAN CATHOLIC BISHOP.

Melbourne, August 22.

An attempt was made yesterday on the life of the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne by a man named P. A. O’Farrell, formerly practising as a solicitor. He is a brother of H, J. Farrell, who shot at the Duke of Edin - burgh in Sydney in 1868. Archbishop Gould was riding along the Brighton road, near Mebourne, early last evening when O’Farrell Bred two shots at him from a revolver. One took effect and wonnded the Archbishop slightly in the finger. O’Farrell made off, but was captured after a long chase and some resistance. O’Farrell has an equity suit against the Archbishop, and recently applied for a warrant againt tbe latter for perjury. The application was, however, refused. The news of the outrage has caused considerable excitement here. Lateb. O’Farrel fired at Archbishop Gould from a distance of only two yards. The second shot did not hit the Archbishop; the first one alone took effect, as already stated. When O'Farrell made off he evidently believed that he had succeeded in his murderous attempt or ho would have made farther use of his revolver. When his pursuers came up with him he threatened to shoot them, but was ultimately secured. Fifty ballets were found in his pockets. It is clear that tbe attack had been fully planned, and that the Archbishop had a most providential escape. 8 p.m. The wound infletod by O’Farrell upon Archbishop Gonld is very slight. O’Farrell was brought up at the Police Court this afternoon and remanded to Friday next.
