At the Harbor Board meeting to-day, it was resolved to invite competitive tenders for harbor improvements, offering a prize of £SOO for tho best. £l5O will be expended in supplying plans of the roadstead, and existing harbor works to competitors.

InquestNelson, August 16. An inquest was held to-day on the body of the man Nelson, who was found dead in his cell at the gaol yesterday. The evidence showed that the utmost attention and kindness was shown to deceased, who was left alone at his own request, and although the doctor who saw him on Sunday morning had diagnosed the case correctly, there appeared no probability of a fatal termination. The post mortem revealed that death had resulted from congestion of the lungs. The heart and Hver were diseased and the stomach and intestines were congested. A verdict was given in accordance with the medical evidence.

The Northern RailwayChristchurch, August 16. Steps are being taken to hold a public meetiog at an early, date to consider the question of the northern railway extension.

The ship Lyttelton, bound for this port, passed the Bluff yesterday, all well. The schooner, Sirocco, given up as lost, was captained by T. S. Brown, her owner, and left Newcastle on May 28.
