(Per s.b. Australia at Auckland). Sydney, August 10. The engine fitters and trimmers of the Australian Steam Navigation Co.’s works, Pyrmont, forwarded a requisition asking for an increase of twopence per hour in their wages. Owing to the high price of provisions the Company granted the request. A team of footballers from Queens land arrived yesterday by the Reichardt. They wore warmly welcomed by the Southern Rugy Union. The first match takes place on Saturday against a combined team, on the Sydney Association ground. The Hares Coursing Clnb Metropolitan Meeting terminated yesterday at Booby Hill. The sport was good, but there was a poor attendance. Mr A. Parkes’ hounds scored three wins. Melbourne.
A deputation waited on Mr Bent from the Metropolitan Gas Company, in reference to lighting the central main lines by electric light. It is stated the Company is prepared to supply any quantity of lighting power required. Mr Bent requested the deputation to state in writing the improvement they could effect. The Fire and Marine Insurance Company of Australasia have declared a dividend of ten per cent. The funeral of Mr Lawes, yesterday, was followed by the leading members of the legal profession. The masters and owners of coasting vessels held a large meeting to consider the desirability of amendments in the “Marino Board Act,” in regard to some case which it is said presses unfairly on the local shipowners. Mr Johnston, proprietor of the Mount Joy sugar plantation, Miva, near Maryborough, fell into a vat of boiling syrup and was scalded to death.
