The greatest smoker in Germany must certainly be Prince Charles, tho Emperor William’s brother, who consumes daily from 18 to 24 strong Havanas. A cigar-holder has just been made for tho Prince, tho American Register tells us, by which he can smoko three cigars at a time. Enemies of tho fragrant weed, however, cannot allege that this inveterate habit has injured the Prince’s health ; for, in spite of his 81 years, Prince Charles is strong and active, is devoted to hunting, works hard at his military duties, and wears no spectacles.
A German captain of artillery named Van Ehrenborg, having written a pamphlet in which ho endeavored to show that millions of marks might he saved upon the war budget annnually by the abolition of pomp and show, has been tried by a military court at Cassel, and sentenced to three months’ imprisonment, to pay the expenses of the trial, and to be
dismissed from the service. The court found that the prisoner had insulted the Minister of War, as well as the Imperial Body Guard, of which he bad contested the utility.
