The monthly meeting of the Caledonian Lodge (Masonic) takes place this evening. A veritable lutut natwras is now on view in George street (at Southau andJStubbs old premises), in the shape of a stuffed eight-legged creature born of a cow at Botany Bay. It is a curious combination of the kangaroo and calf. It is worth looking at, and merits the attention of scientists. Mr Bright opened the new Central Free Libraries at Birmingham on June 1. In his address he said a love of books was like a personal introduction to the great and good men of all past times. Books, thougn silent, were able to answer almost any enquiry, and the only regret he felt when in tbe presence of a library, was that life was too short to fully enjoy the ample repast they afforded. He hold that the writings of great men purified the Government and exalted the nation, and urged upon bis hearers the desirability of a better acquaintance with the poets onjthe other side of the Atlantic. To the great mass of the people, and especially to the younger portion, free libraries were of incalculable benefit” Non-subscribers to the Timaru Atheneum, please note the above'!
