A THRILLING INCIDENT.

A thrilling incident recently took place in the Driving Park at Scranton, United States. It was the fourth day of the spring races, and a crowd of 5000 persons was present. In the scoring of one of the heats, the horses came up to the wire at a desperate rate of speed, and Nellie, a high-spinted mare, broke into a 1 dead run. Her run, indeed, was so dead, that it nearly brought death to her driver, for her bridle-bit snapped in two, and she shot ahead of the rest in a wild gallop. The driver, Barney Desmorest, however, preserved his presence of mind in this moment of extreme peril. Leaping quickly from the seat of the * sulky to (he mare’s back, he crawled up to her shoulders. Then stooping forwards, he caught her by the neck and shoulders, and brought her to a sudden standstill last as she was about to take a flying leap over a steep embankment. Thundering"cheers greeted this act of courage, and Barney Desmorest was the hero of the hour. Veteran horsemen who were present said it was the finest display ot pluck they ever wit-, nessed on the track ; and as the track has been the scene of many thrilling incidents, this is no slight compliment to Barney Desmorest.
