BOROUGH COUNCIL.

An ordinary meeting of the Council was held last evening. Present: Messrs Jackson (Chairman), Gibson, Cullman Gabites, Filmer, Ross, Bush. THE FIRE BELL. ThejTown Clerk read the correspondence relative to tho offer of the bell, which was cracked, to the Council, Cr Rosa moved and Or Bush seconded, and it was carried— “ That the Town Clerk inform the manager of _ tho Union Insurance Company that, whilst testing the bell sent for approval, the same cracked on trial, and the Council await instructions as to returning tho same.” Cr. Filraej? moved, and Cr Ross seconded, and it was carried—“ That the procuration of a suitable bell for a fire alarm be dealt with by the Works Com* mittee, with power to act,"

TENDEES. The following tenders for the supply of broken metal were opened as follows : ti. Nichols, 8a per yard ; E. B. Sibly, 8s per yard ; J. Lawrie, 8s per yard ; S. H. Kirby, 8s lid per yard. The tender of E- B. Sibley wan accepted. cain’s;tebbace. Mr Meikle and other residents asked that the level of Cain’s Terrace might be lowered, and the road kerbed and channelled ; in return, they undertook the asphalting of the footpath. Councillor Gibson moved, Councillor Cullman seconded and it was carried — “That in answer to the letter of Mr John Meikle and others, in re farther improvements in Cain’s Terrace,the Foreman be instructed to make Cain's Terrace and Beswick street on the same level at their junction, and relieve the crown of the hill as much as possible, without interfering with the water, gas or sewer pipes; and the kerbing and channelling from Main Eoad and George street ho continued around Turnbull's corner and the present Bank of New Zealand, and the west aide be kerbed, and a narrow channel, on condition that the owners of property guarantee to asphalt the west side at their, own expense. The guarantee to be the amount of estimated cost of asphalte placed to the Borough fund account, before the work is proceeded with."

Or Boss moved, Cr Bush seconded, and it was carried —“ That the Clerk of Works prepare plans and specifications for improvements in Cain’s Terrace, and that tenders be called for the work, to be in on Thursday, 3rd August, at tour o’clock p.m., and that the Works Committee he empowered to deal with the same.

THE DIVISION OF ‘THE BOROUGH INTO WARDS. A map of the proposed division of the Borough into wards being placed on the table, Or Boss moved and Or Filmer seconded—“ That this Council having now, for the first time, submitted to them the plan of subdivision of the Borough into four wards,their opinion is that the divisions are inconsistently divided, inasmuch as proposed ward No. 1 is of the rateable anhual value of £29,900 ; No. 2, £IO,OOO ; No. 3, £7000; and No. 4, £2900. Therefore it is expedient that His Worship the Mayor be requested to interview the Governor on the matter) and ask him to use the discretionary power in him by law vested, to alter or modify the plan or sub division as per plan marked and forwarded."—Carried. PUBLIC BUILDING LICENSE, A license under the Borough By-law No. 4, was granted to Messrs Maclean and Stewart’s horse repository, Strathallah street, as a public building, on the motion of Cr Bush, seconded by Or Filmer. MISCELLANEOUS. In reply to certain correspondence, the following resolutions were passed : —“ That the Town Clerk bo instructed to proceed against all persons infringing

! the Waterworks By-law, or the MuniI cipal Corporations Act, by taking water i from the mains without paying for it.’’ “That the Foreman of Works, Mr Pale, be instructed to visit that part of the race adjoining Mr Lennon’s land, I examine the leakage, and have same i repaired, either by pipes or concrete, as I found best suitable ; and the Chairman be authorised to make any necessary arrangements.
