THE EGYPTIAN QUESTION.
The Cologne “ Zeitung” wrote in May of the Egyptian difficulty in the following terms: —“ With England the interest in Egypt is especially a commercial one; with France a political one. Exaggerated notions of Panislamist' movements in the north of Africa, must all the more excite the French imagination, as Prince von Bismarck is acquainted with the man who holds all the threads in his hands. If all prognostics be not deceitful, the new phase of the Eastern Question will be played in or near Egypt. It will divide Europe in two parties, those interested in the Bosphorus and those interested in the Suez Canal. It is very lucky for the young Empire of Germany that it should be so, for Egypt will divide Eussia and France into two hostile campsi”
