THE OSTRICH OF A THIRD STAN DARD.
“This Ostrich is an African animal, that lives on sand, and generally hunts on horre-back. The female bud makes a nest in the . sand, which is simply a deep hole, and then the male bird lays in it ten or twelve large eggs, which he hatches for making ornaments, and for food for his family. Those .eggS'chase their, parent all over the desert till the poor fellow is quite tired. The three tail-feathers of this ostrich form the motto. 4 1 serve,’ and they belong to the Prince of Wales, Who is also formed of these three tailfeathers. This ostrich is often used for drinking cups and other various ornaments. But it is chiefly valued for the beautiful feathers found on his legs, and those that grow on the egg shell." The foregoing “Mark Twainish Essay ’’ is the work of a very young girl attending a country school “ within the hounds” of Southland. It would bo hard tell how many of the errors are due to pure rimplicity, and how many to humor that is certainly precocious.
