SIR JULIUS VOGEL.
On Saturday the Mayor of Invercargill was requisitioned to convene a public meeting to consider what steps should be taken to receive Sir J. Vogel on hia arrival at the Bluff this morning. The meeting was fairly attended and decided upon appointing a Committee to carry out its wishes, which were evidently in the direction of simply meeting Sir Julius on his arrival, and giving him a cordial welcome, a banquet being generally considered superfluous and not in accord with the probable wishes of the late Agent-General. The proceedings were enlivened by a speech from Mr Colin McKay a member of the Town Council, in the course of which he strongly denounced Sir Julius Vogel’s carreer in this colony, stating that it was simply contemptible. If he again entered the political arena it would be a great calamity for Now Zealand. As a member of the corporation, he would object to any expense being incurred in connection with the reception, but would be willing to vote half-a crown to procure a pack of cards for Sir Julius in order that ho might make another start in the colony. Messrs Mclvor and J. W. Mitchell combatted MrgMcKay’s statement, the former pointed out bow Sir Julius served Southland in connection with immigration, and the latter praising bis scheme of Government life insurance, which alone would.entitle him to their gratitude.
