AUSTRALIAN NEWS.

[By Telegraph.] (Per b,B. Wakatipu, from Sydney.) Sydney, July 4. There was a decrease of over 26 per cent in the charges of drunkenness heard at the Central Police Court daring the half year ended June 30, compared with the offences'of this class during the corresponding period last year. The weather on July 1, for the second day of the New South Wales Coursing Club’s meeting was beautifully fine, and excellent sport was obtained. The attendance was only moderate. Teviotdale won the St. Leger, Trojan the New Plumpton Stakes, Kathleen the Metropolitan, and Handsome Girl the Woodstock Plate.

A race between G. Reynolds and J. Power in light skiffs for £6O a side was rowed on the Ist inst. over the champion course, Eoynolds won by six lengths. An apprentice named Tom Mackell while furling sails fell to the deck of the barque Cumbria at Newcastle and died instantly. Deceased was well connected at Penrith, Cumberland, England. Tho Harbor Trust hare determined to abandon tho Harbor Bill now before Parliament, in consequence of radical alterations made in it since leaving their hands, and have decided to request Parliament to pass legislation which would validate past acts of the Trust to make their position legal, to give increased borrowing powers, and to vest in the Trust the land required for a new out for the Yarra. In tho Legislative Council, Mr Bain, in moving the second reading of the Supply Bill, said the Government had telegraphed to the Agent-General to purchase a large gun-boat to steam 11 knots, cost £37,750 ; also, a gun-boat to steam 9 knots, cost £27,500 ; a torpedo boat, £10,500 ; and two smaller torpedo boats, £8,300 each. Tenders for the erection of a lighthouse on Cliffy Island, near Wilson’s Promontory, were opened oa the 29th.

They found that the vessel wan stranded through stress of weather, and that tho master was unblameahle. Mr Bent was unable to attend the opening of the railway to Hay, owing to ill-health. He has gone to Sandhurst for a change. The net increase in tho revenue for the quarter ended 30th Juno was £45,712, Customs showing the largest increase, £26,767. Adelaide, July 4. The promoters of the proposed ocean dock accompanied by the representatives of the Marine Board, visited the site on the Ist July, near Port Adelaide Lighthouse. The President expressed a favorable opinion of the scheme. It is understood the promoters are actuated by a hope that Adelaide will eventually be the terminal port for ocean steamers when the railway connection is extended to the other colonies.

Alady has been nominated at Queenstown for the office of District Councillor. The Returning Officer is doubtful if she is eligible for election. Attention is still called to tho defence* less, state of the colony. It is stated that Fort Granville is in charge of one man, that the powder magazine is unprotected, and the armoury supervised by only three or four old soldiers. Elder and Smith’s wool and produce business has been formed into a Company with a capital of £200,000. The Company pay Elder and Smith £40,000 for the goodwill, plant, &c. All the shares have been allotted. Pekth, July 4. The Legislative Council are summoned for despatch of business on July 26. The principal fruit preserving industry at Nelson Grange, is in the market for leasing. The statistics show an estimated acreage of cultivated land last January of 67,496. Beisbane, July 4. Margaret Spillane has been committed for trial for the murder of Irwin at Towooraba. Her husband was discharged.
