Mitton ; Clerk of Course, Mr G. Eroeman, The weather was very fine yesterday, and the meeting a thorough success. Six or seven hundred people being present. Considering the distance of the course from tho town this was a very largo gathering, Tho ground was heavy and completely saturated with rain. Several cases of baulk occurred and several throws, but tho jumping was generally good. Tho following are the results : Waimate Steeplechase Handicap, of 100 sovs, second horse to receive 15 sovs. ; 3 miles. Mr H. Adams’ b h Kosciusko, syrs lOst 91b ... ... (Shecnan) 1 Mr J. Quamby, Clarence, and A.G., were scratched. Betting—6 to 4on tho field. This was an exciting race, but the i horses were shockingly blown by it, the j riders being splashed with mud. \ There was £122 in the totalisator, I only £4 on the winner, and dividends of £27 13s were paid. Maiden Plate of 50 sovs; second . horse to save his stake ; weight for age, but winner of the Timaru or Oamavu Maiden to carry lOlbs extra. Two miles. Mr W. D. Gang Awa and A.G. also started. Black Doctor carried 101 ba penalty. Overdraft came to the front near the finish and won by four lengths, having fallen once side by side with Black Doctor. Lubra fell twice. Overdraft at the beginning struck the rails and brought them down.
There were 209 investors in the totalisator, 72 on the winner. Codntt Cup, a handicap of 75 sovs ; second horse to save his stakes ; 2£ miles. Mr J. Pilbrow’s ch g Clarence 12st 121 b (H. There were 12 entries. The race was a certainty for Clarence all through, though the horses held well together. Of £lO2 in the totalisator, £76 was on the winner. Consolation Handicap of 40sovs* Two miles. Mr. Sherwin’s Mokarakara, lOst 71b (Cotton) 1 Mr J. Allan’s Little John, lOst 81b (Allan) 2 Mr Barclay’s Lubra, lOst 71b (Simpson) 3 Black Doctor and Gang Awa’ also started.
This was the fastest race of the day. Gang Awa’ was not true to name, for he stuck at the sod wall. The race was won by a length. This concluded the meeting,
