[Reuter's Agency, j_ Egyptian Affairs. London, June 2. In the House of Commons last night, Sir Charles Dilko, Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, in reply to a question, stated that he believed that all the Powers "would accept the proposal to hold a conference for the consideration and settlement, of the Egyptian question, though no definite decision had been come to. He further announced that information had been received that the Egyptians had commenced constructing earthworks around Alexandria, and that the Government were in consequence consulting with Admiral Sir Beauchamp Seymour, commander of the United Squadron, as to the course to, be pursued in regard thereto. The Turkish Commission of Inquiry into the state of affairs in' Egypt leaves Constantinople to-day for Alexandria, on beard the Turkish ironclad squadron. Raising the Wind.
A New South Wales loan of £2,000,000 has been placed on the market. Tenders must be at a minimum of £lO2. 1 CommercialConsols remain at 100-J ex div. The market rate of discount has been raised to 2J per' cent; the , Bank rate remains at 3. per cent. Now Zealand securities are firm Tit last quotations, viz., 5 per cent 10 40 loan, 108$; 5 per cent 1889 loan, 105 ; 4$ per cent 1879-1904 loan, 103$. -. New Zealand breadstuffs continue dull at the following unchanged prices; —Adelaide wheat, ex warehouse, 52 s New Zealand wheat, ex warehouse, 51s; Adelaide floure, ek warehouse 355. The total quantity of wheat' ‘ afloat for Great Britain is 2,030,000 quarters, or 270,000 quarters - less than at this day last week. . ■ , Australian tallow is advancing. Best beef is now at 43s 6d, and best mutton at 44s 6d. The total stock in London yesterday, was 5900 casks. Wool Sales.; . At to-day’s wool .auction 10,000 bales were offered. There , was a firm and active demand for most descriptions, but New Zealand greasy sorts were rather weaker. American Ironworkers on Strike. New York, June 1-* Intelligence is to hand from Chicago, that a large body of ironworkers, who are. on - strike, boarded a train, and .severely maltreated a number non " strikers. . The disturbance was of serious character, and was only suppressed by police interference. Fully 6Q.000 iron workers are now on strike at Chicago, and at this and other cities in the States.
