Kerr; Stewards— Messrs T. Hall, M. Jonas, E. G. Kerr, D. McLean, and R. Stansell. The South Canterbury Jockey Club’s annual Steeplechase Meeting was held on tho racecourse at Washdyke to-day. The acceptances were good and nearly all The horses turned up. The course was in capital order, and tho fences were stiff, but none of them too formidable far the class of horses entered. The weather was dull but fine, and, contrary to expectation, there was a good attendance.

For the first race, the big event of the day, all the acceptors appeared, and the race was a very open one. Clarence,, however, was the favorite in the betting, V The race was the grandest one that has ever been seen cn the Tjmaru course, and, but for an accident at the third fence from home, Katerfelto was almost certain to have pulled it off. As it was, - old Clarence added another to his long list of victories, and he was splendidly ridden by Lunn. The Maiden was a gift .to Mr Armitage’s Black Doctor, none of the others getting over. Baron was the first -to clear obstacle number one, closely followed by Katerfelto, Why Not,iGlarence and Young Sledmere. Quamby fell at this fence, and was completely thrown > out of the race in consequence. At the fence leading on to the road, Baron, Katerfelto, and Clarence got over, the • two former with a strong lead, but the yi other three baulked, and were n6t able to get over for some time.' Their chance of the race was nil, and “i after persevering for some time at this and the next fence they gave up the .' attempt. The race now resolved itself into a test between Baron, Katerfelto, and Clarence. The latter fell a long way behind but was taken over his: jumps with great skill and judgment. They all got over the fences, and Baron kept the lead fer two miles, but ho struck the fences three times, and nearly unseated his jockey. I Although thrown on the liorse’s neck, he managed each time to regain his seat very cleverly, and never visited mother ehrth during the race. At’tho . stone wall in front of the Stand, the second time round, Clarence came up and took leading. position ; over the double and into the road ; Katerfelto then went up and led Barpn. At the third fence from home, Clarence and > Katerfelto both fell, and Baron resumed the lead. Clarence andKaterfolto’s jockey soon mounted and went in pu’-suit. Clarence led over the last hurdle home, Baron being beaten off. A good . race now took place between Clarence and Karerfelto for first place, but the old horse was landed a winner by four lengths, Baron a good third. There was £224 on the totalisator, 69 being on the winner. The rider, of Moltko (Kelly) got rather badly hurt by a . fall «nt the seventh fence. Moltko had been jumping well before he foil. Betting—2 to lon tho field.
