[Reuter's Agknov.j London, April 29. Hanlan and Trickett. The sculling race between Edward Hanlan, of Toronto, the champion of the world, and Edward Trickett, of Sydney, for £SOO a side, took place to-day over the usual course on the Thames, and resulted in a victory for the former by four lengths; Hanlan’s victory over Trickett was: the easiest that can be imagined. He stopped three times during the race,, and literally “ played ” with Trickett. The weather was very fine, the sun shining brightly, and the water was perfectly smooth. Large crowds of people witnessed the contest from the banks of the river all along the course. The New L* L.
It: is now announced that Earl Spencer, the newly appointed Viceroy of Ireland, will continue to hold the position of Lord President of the Privy Council, but will be assisted in the duties of that offce by Lord Oarlingford, Lord Privy Seal. The “Suspects-” It is believed that the imprisoned “ suspects,” in Ireland, will shortly be released, but no authoritative statement to that effect has yet been made public. Cloture- , In the House of Commons to-day the cloture proposals of Mr Glad stone were again under considcra tion. In the course of the sitting an amendment was proposed, that the Ministry and not the Speaker should have power to initiate the adoption of cloture. After a protracted debate the amendment was rejected on a division by a majority of 46. Ismail Pasha in Hot WaterIt has transpired that the court martial which tried the Circassian officers for conspiracy to murder Arabi Pasha, Minister of War, has found that Ismail Pasha, ex-Khedive, was the instigator of the conspiracy, and the Court consequently recommended that his civil list should be stopped. The London Chartered Bank of Australia has declared a dividend of 3 per cent for the past year. The Egyptian Army. Cairo, May 1. Forty-three Circassian officers of the Egyptian army, who'were last month arrested on a charge of conspiracy to murder Arabi Pasha, Minister of War, have been tried by Court Martial, and having been found guilty, have been sentenced to be exiled.
