TIMARU HIGH SCHOOL.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Board was held last evening. Present— Messrs Chisholm, (Chairman), Clulee, Rev, W. Gillies, and the Mayor. Letters were read from Messrs Belfield and LeCren, and a telegram from Mr Wakefield apologising for their absence. The Eector, Mr Dawson, was also present. The following business was disposed of after the confirmation of tho minutes. The Rector’s report and recommendations were received.

The report of tho sub-committee appointed to consider the best mode of providing physical exercises for girls was received and adopted, A sot of apparatus,dumbells, aud Indian clubs are to be obtained for the purpose. Mr Gillies protested against the increase in tho number of holidays which the “ term ” system had involved, and tabled a notice of motion as follows—“ That tho dates fixed for the second and third terms bo altered so as to reduce the length of the holidays,” A discussion took place on the subject of Mr Sutter’s motion re scholarships, resulting in its being resolved to throw open one of tho Board’s scholarships to all pupils of tho High School. The mover expressed disapproval of the practice of expending the Board’s funds on scholarships. A financial statement was made by the Chairman, and accounts to the amount of £l7O 13s 9d were passed for payment.

It was decided to inspect an azimuth telescope under offer from P. W. Hutton and Co. with a snow to procuring it for the school.
