WAIMATE.

A special meeting of the Borough Council was held on Monday, the Ist inst. Members present—His Worship the Mayor’ and Councillors Evans, Walts, Collett, Hunt, Freeman and Goldsmith. The meeting was convened to consider the matter of taking a road through the education reserve, Queen street, under the provisions of Tho Public Works Act 1876. It was pro-

posed—“ That this Council take no steps j in the matter of a new street 40 feet in j width proposed to bo laid out from Glasgow street to a street proposed to bo run through the education reserve from Queen street to Shearman street ns at present it fails to see the utility of the above street.” As an amendment it was proposed—“ That stops be taken, in accordance with the provisions of the Municipal Corporations Act 1876, the < Public Works Act 1876, and the several • Acts amending the same to take for the purpose of forming a street lino from Glasgow street to the now street laid off through the property of the Education Board of South Canterbury, 20 feet at the western end of section No. 00 by a length of 66 feet, the property of Mr Raven.” The amendment, on being put, was carried, the original motion being lost. It was resolved—“ That the South Canterbury Board of Education be asked to convey the land set apart for new roads in the Borough at once, and on receipt of affirmative reply, the Engineer ho instructed to call for tenders for proposed work from Queen street to Shearman street; also, that the same notice he given re conveyance of land as given by Messrs D. Grant and J. Harris.” A proposal that the new street from Queen street to Shearman street be called Clarence street was allowed to stand over for further consideration. It was resolved— •* That applications be invited for the office of poundkeeper for the Borough, applications to be sent in to the Town Clerk not later than the Bth inst., at noon ; and that a special meeting be called for half-past seven p.m. on May 8, to accept tenders for same ; also, to take into consideration the advisability of vesting Knottingley Park in the Borough Council, and to consider the alteration of railway site.”
