Death was instantaneous. The Steamer Fatea. ' Wellington, April 17The Fatea company's steamer “Fatea” was abandoned to the underwriters yesterday. Captain Bendall arrived dn Saturday with appliances, and attempted to get her off, by the evening tide, but she was hurled violently against the cliff, a quantity of which fell upon her, and her hull being stove, she filled with water and sent the water running in snd ont of her donkey engine, which bad a miraculous escape from bursting. The Fatea was insured for half her value as follows:—Union £IOOO, South British £IOOO, Colonial £SOO. ■ Fropert TaxAbout a dozen persons were sued for property tax, and 10 per cent of the cases Were set down for this morning. All ; had paid bnt two against whom orders were made. .

At the Magistrate’s Court, this morning,'- Henry Lamb, 11 years old, for ■ticking up and robbing another boy of two shillings was ordered to be sent to the Industrial School for.four years. . , Trout Ova, Last, season the Acclimatisation Society disposed of 3-1,000 young trout, 12,000 going to South Canterbury ; 2000 to Westport; 2,600 to Wellington ; 200 to Nelsohj and the remainder to North Canterbury rivers. Found Drowned • A woman of bad character, named Mary Welatead, was found drowned in the river Avon this morning. MagisterialDunedin, April 17. At the City Police Court, Thomas Hodgetts was committed for trial for robbery from the person^ LibelIn the Supreme Court, the libel action Turnbull v. David Proudfoot, has commenced. Mr Bathgate’s name was ■truck out for misjoinder. The libel alleges that Turnbull and Bathgate attempted to work a swindle by foisting valueless lands on the New Zealand Mortgage and Investment Company. The letter is anonymous, and is signed by ‘f A Friend,” addressed to Sir W. Drake, London, Chairman of Company. Disaster to the Maid of Otago. INVERCARGILL, April 17. The Maid of Otago arriving from Dunedin, broke her cable and ran into the bridge over the Aparima at Riverton. The vessel is much injured and nearly full of water, and the greater portion of her cargo will be damaged.
