... SCHOLARSHIP REGULATIONS. Mr Steward drew attention to certain hardships in connection with the scholarships. Competitors in the Boards classes C. and D., were obliged to attend a High school, while no pupil attending a High school was allowed to compete for a scholarship. This was unreasonable as, if a pupil won a scholarship and went to a High school as required, he would be cutoff from competition in a higher class. _ Mr Walcot, was of opinion that scholarships should be limited to pupils 5 of Public schools' and that r scholarships - shbuld be /tenable' fpr ; twb '-ot three but that thdre were to be two clpses of scholarships. Mr Barker 1 thbMht that, the duty of the Board; was to atfpd to the.interestp 'of Bublia-schools, o : • T-ii; > Mr, Wakefield pointed, out that it would bo impossible: to pass resolutions ■; at, variance, with-ithe-flaw. Mr Wakefield thought , the minds,-of inembers were confined by the term of “ High School.” The Board knew no High School, if!-only/ recognised two. classes of scholarships, viz., those con-' fined ,tp ; , public - schools and open ones.; He 'believed the best way; to. get oyer the difficulty would be tb constitute the, Timaru School a District High School, i Mr Walcot thought the ,0 and D.| scholarships should bo-' tenable over! .three years, Dr Foster said He understood it to be; the wish of-the Board to embrace in its;

regulations the greatest possible number. , He.would support Mr Walcot’s' opinion ' after the explanation he had just heard. Mr Steward suggested that a Committee should be appointed to consider the/whole .matter and report to the; Board;" * - \ Mr Wakefield said-that precisely the; same thing had been done before ; the; Board' find; discussed j the thing,, haddisagreed, and a Committee,; and filially had drifted into k inudd l e. • After a long discussion it was moved! by 'Mr Striw&Vd, seconded by Mr Barker; and .carried—“ That the whole question, .of, Schdlkbhip..regulations be referred to; ! d' Comidittee, composed 'of the Cbairmafi, j Dr Foster,, ahf w : Wkke(field, to report! to the next,meeting of the Board.”;.
