WAIMATE.
The County Council held its monthly meeting on Wednesday last, Mr Manchester in the chair, in the absence of the Chairman of the Council. A large amount of correspondence was received and dealt with, Hospital affairs were attended to, tho state of the roads and bridges discussed,' and the Engineer’sreport considered. A number of accounts were passed for payment and, tho meeting terminated. Tho Waimate Gorge Railway Company are making a vigorous start. A tender for supplying sleepers has booh accepted (Mr A. Hayes for 10,000 at 3s 4d), and on Friday, April 14, tenders for formation andbridges will be opened. Mr Frank Sice was elected a director.
Tho Weslcyans gave, tliejr Minister, the Rev. J. Lewis, a farewell tea on Tuesday evening. Tho place, was inconveniently crowded and tea had to be served to successive drafts of guests, numbering 300 in all: Extreme regret was felt by all at losing Mr Lewis 'who is transferred to another sphere by the operation of the inexorable of the law Methodist body. ' Mr Lewis has won everybody’s good opinion during his residence in VVaimute. -
