The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, report on the South Canterbury grain market for the week ending March 23rd as follows Wheat is in active demand, 4s to 4s 21 being freely given, and many growers are holding for a higher figure. The quality of the wheat is inferior to last season’s, and many parcels coming forward are small and shrivelled, through being reaped before maturity. . . Oats.—Numerous enquiries are being made, and owing to the unsettled state of the market, farmers are disinclined to sell. The threshing of this cereal is only commencing. Sales of feed qualities have taken place at 2s Bd, f.o.b. Barley.—This grain is coming forward slowly, the quantity in the dristrict being light. For bright malting samples 3s 8d is offered in store, but growers display no disposition to quit at this figure.
