Attention is directed to the advertisement of Mr T. G. Eowley, Gunsmith, of Main North Bond. Mr Eowley has opened up extensive shipments of new and superior goods, guns at all prices, decoy ducks, shooting knives &c. Our telegraphic summary informs us that Messrs Joubert and Twopehy have asked the Premier’s advice as to inviting the principal Maori chiefs to the opening of the exhibition. This is a wisely generous invitation, and is as creditable to the firm as the acceptance of it will be beneficial to the relations between the races Detective Jeffreys, of Dunedin, got on the wrong scent the other day at Marton. He “ wanted ” one Oliver, who, having left Dunedin suddenly with somebody else’s jewellery, thought a change of name might be as beneficial as a change of air, and accordingly adopted that of Franks. The officer struck the trail of Mr Franks of the firm of Wimble and Co., printers’ brokers, and followed that gentleman to Wanganui, thence to Turakina, thence to Marton, where he at length caught him, Mr Franks, who it is needless to say wouldn t steal a hair-pin, luckily had a friend in the town who identified him, and the detective had to look out in another direction. .. An old bachelor, who particularly listed literary women, asked an authoress if she could throw any light on hissing. “ I could,” said she, looking archly at him ; “ but I think it’s better in the dark.”
