The Waimate Fire Brigade have decided to obtain one of Lieutenant Mitchell’s fireescapes, of the kind shown here during the sitting of the Fire Brigades Confer, ence. Dr Gray Hassell, who was yesterday appointed resident surgeon 'to the Timaru Hospital, is the son of Mr James Hassell, of Oamaru. Another son of the same old colonist has also recently been appointed Engineer to the Wanganui Harbor Board. A portrait of the late Mr John Deans, of Ricacrton, has been added to the gallery of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association. It was presented by his widow, and was painted by an artist of Edinburgh. The Little River Railway is reported to be in some danger of partial destruction from the flooding of Lake Ellesmere, and the Akaroa County and Borough Councils ore stirring in the matter of preventive measures. So far they have only proceeded as far as obtaining unprofessional reports, which sn -gest the keeping open of an outlet to the sea as the simplest way of securing a low level in the lake.
