(Per Press Association.) Easter EncampmentsWanganui, March 4. It has been decided to hold the Easter Encampment on the Wanganui racecourse for the companies of this district and Manawatu, Kangitikei and Taranaki. Five hundred are expected. The camp opens on April 6, and breaks up on Easter Monday with a sham fight and review. A meeting of officers was held last night when Watt and Hutchison positively denied telling Lieutenant Young that the Wanganui Volunteers were willing to join in the Wellington Encampment. A wild Goose ChaseWellington, March 4. The police expedition to Port Underwood, consisting of asergeant detective and a constable, has returned without making any enquiry or arrest. It was supposed there was a depot there for goods stolen from Wellington Wharf. A Striking ExhibitionJem Mace gave a private subscription sparring entertainment last night, but the attendance was very limited. “Struck Oil-” The Williamsons opened in “ Struck Oil ” to a very large house, although the Weather was very unfavorable. Dissatisfaction at'iKumaraKumara, March 4. A large number of miners assembled at Oilman's Town last night, and held an indignation meeting to protest against the vexatious delay occurring by the present conduct of the Warden’s Court, also to take into consideration the advisability of forming a Board for Kumara. The following resolutions were passed almost unanimously: “ That in the opinion of this meeting the* indifferent mode of administering mining tlaw and conducting business by the Warden, Mr H. A. Stratford, at the Kumara Warden’s Court, is very
unsatisfactory, and vexatious , delays ' retard the general progress of the district, and that a petition be sent round ftr signature praying the Government to relieve Mr Warden Stratford of his duties as Warden of the Kumara Mining District,” “ That the Chairman of the meeting forward a copy of the foregoing resolution to the Minister of Justice and ask him to change the Warden with as little delay as possible." On the TrailChristchurch, March 4. The police have obtained the names of the perpetrators of several of the recent assaults in the suburbs. The Exhibition. The Governor has consented to forward invitations to the commanders of the various Squadrons in these waters to attend the International Exhibition. The Government had previously declined to invite them. , Ended in Smoke. Dunedin, March 5. The Gladstone election petition was dismissed by consent, respondent being allowed costs.
