(Per Press Association.) The Premier and the Natives. Ohinimetu, Feb. 28, The Maoris continued addressing the Premier for two hours and delayed his departure for Kotomahana considerably. The matters discussed were of great importance to the district and the residents,' but were not of public interest. They specially urged the prosecution of the road from Cambridge, and the Premier has promised to have the road completed before winter. A question about the Licensing Law was also raised aginst the prohibition to supply Maoris. They urged their understanding that there was but one law for themselves and the Europeans. The Natives also wanted a school established ! to teach boys European trades. The Premier promised the matter consideration. The Premier then left for Kotomahana. He is expected to return to-morrow, and proceed to Napier via Taupo. Sir John O’ShannassyThis gentlemen is here, and a large number of other visitors. The Government land sale on the 7th is likely to prove a great success. Fire and Narrow EscapeWellington, Feb. 28. Meenkin’s general store, dwelling house, and stable at Clare Villa was burnt down this morning. Mrs Meenkin’s child and servant had a narrow escape. Hardly anything has been saved. The origin of the fire is unknown. The Westport FloatedWestpobt, Feb. 20, The steamer Westport was successfully floated early this morning. BranchlLand League. Napier, Feb. 28 The branch Land League succeeded last night in getting a meeting place and elected officers. The principals are Colonial born. Possession is Strength. The Corporation have received notice to quit their offices as the rooms are required by the Government, but as the Corporation received authority to occupy from the Superintendent of the Province before abolition, it is intended to contest the right of the Government to turn them out. Vital StatisticsThe vital statistics of the Borough for the month of February are : births 33, marriages 21, deaths 9, Volunteer CommissionInvercargill, Feb, 28. The Volunteer officers here have been asked to make suggestions for the Volunteer commission. They meet to-night for the purpose. Corrupt Practices- ' In the Riverton election petition case to-morrow, Messrs McDermott and T. McDonald are solicitors for the fietitioner, and Messrs Stout and Finn or the respondents.
